May 2021 Draft Preview

-- From the office of Reagan --

The day has come, our reckoning day, after a year of handing Zack first rounders we now much deal with the consequences of our foolishness and rash decision making. Which, to be fair, I had a part to play in too. Yet something tells me that his 3 picks aren’t going to be in the limelight of draft night; No, what our eyes will be locked into are the storylines that we saw unfold over the past year, that have now come full circle and now loom over the most important day of each year for many franchises. Will Bettis take a player in the first that gets playing time? How will Jordan reset his roster with 10 picks, while having none in the first. And will David make a compelling pre-draft speech about why having the draft this early in the summer is stupid. Or perhaps greatest of all, will our beloved Bryce make a move to get in on the action, or will he wallow in boredom as names flood the GroupMe chat, while his aging roster makes him wonder at what point he joins Heery in the cellar. We savor the storylines, which is why we write about them. And as the draft draws closer with each day, perhaps a major move could shock the entire league. There are an infinite number of possibilities, each carrying tremendous weight. Which is why we decided to honor those storylines by giving each team a meme (rhyme intended), to represent everything their franchise is feeling as the Christmas day of Fantasy Football is upon us.

Good luck

Draft well enough

Carpe Diem

Zack is a big, dumb bum (rhyme intended)

-- From the office of Co-Commissioner Zack --

REMINDER OUR DRAFT IS IN 2 WEEKS

Zack

Some of the lineups that Zack rolled out over the 2019-20 season were tough to watch, especially the week where that Kendall Hinton character that was a college QB turned WR turned practice squad WR/Special Teamer started at Quarterback for the Broncos and in the Flex spot for Zack, scoring negative points and genuinely looking like a guy that sits on his couch watching football yelling that he “could make that throw” at the TV. In 2020, Zack has used his picks to make upgrades while keeping the future bright with Ja’Marr Chase, Kyle Pitts, and Najee Harris coming aboard. Watch out. P.S. Corey made a $25 bet that he would have a better record than me, clearly not seeing that my team is already better and forgetting that I still have 4 first round picks in 2022 that I can trade to make any additional improvements.

Picks: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.4, 3.9

Targets: Ja’Marr Chase, Najee Harris

Austin H (Heery)

Heery decided to embark on the grueling quest of a full scale rebuild in summer 2020, selling anything of value for any pick he could muster. Now with an entire roster of young players who he is hoping can breakout, 2nd year players, and impending rookies, Heery is still trying to sell whatever scraps he can while holding on to his building blocks. If you run into an injury, Heery will be the first to check to see if he has a player past his prime having a decent season to fill in for a couple weeks in exchange for a mid-late round pick. Heery has Justin Herbert and a solid nucleus of young WR, but needs to figure out his long term RB future.

Picks: 1.4, 2.2, 4.1, 4.2, 4.6, 4.10

Targets: Travis Etienne, Sam Ehlinger

Reagan

Reagan has a problem. He is constantly churning his roster (we all know we have received many incredibly horrible trade offers from Reagan out of absolute nowhere), doing his own personal scouting and saying that every receiver might be the best he has ever seen (enter Devonta Smith this year). He has taken risks and moved Davante Adams and Justin Jefferson for additional picks and young players and continues to be stuck in the bottom 4 while in this perpetual state of rebuilding. Good luck to him on this journey, I can’t wait to see which breakout receiver he identifies then trades next year for yet more picks.

Picks: 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 4.12

Targets: Devonta Smith, Javonte Williams

Corey

Corey’s team looks strong on paper, with 2 elite RB options in Johnathan Taylor and Dalvin Cook, but average WR may end up hurting him. Corey doesn’t have much depth either, so he needs to hope to hit on a young WR with his mid round picks that can help him both this year and in the future and take advantage of this window of contention with the first Playoff berth in quite some time. Corey is well known for his endless pursuit of a QB to get him to the playoffs. Much like the Denver Broncos, he has rostered some real… yeah. With 5 QBs going in the first round of the NFL Draft, one of them is bound to go to Corey and his permanent search for a QB to bring him to the playoffs. After investing heavy resources in Jared Goff (2021 1st and 3rd, plus Justin Jackson), Joe Burrow (rights to Michael Pittman and Van Jefferson), and Ryan Tannehill with a 2021 2nd(Diontae Johnson and Drew Brees), I am eager to see if Corey can’t help himself and invests a further pick into another QB just in case.

Picks: 2.10, 3.5, 3.11

Targets: Nico Collins, Amari Rodgers

Austin B

Austin B’s team took a massive hit on draft night, with the Jaguars taking Travis Etienne in the 1st round and sending James Robinson’s stock plummeting to 3rd round territory after a successful first season. Much like Phillip Lindsay before him, the great story of an undrafted rookie getting passed over is a tale as old as time. Now with literally zero startable RBs on a competitive team and Deshaun Watson facing a suspension, Austin B’s team is in shambles. Good luck, sweet prince, the rebuild is never fun, though it is necessary. Otherwise, the pain will go on longer, as there are 11 teams currently looking ready to compete (sorry Heery, your time is coming).

Picks: 1.8, 2.8, 3.8, 4.8

Targets: Jaylen Waddle (rebuild), Trey Sermon (give it one more shot)

John

We all love John, who throws in jokes, brings a voice of reason, and has a very strange rivalry with Bryce where he always takes the high road. John is very active trading and hasn’t burned any bridges with trading. However, his acquisitions of James Conner (Myles Gaskin and two 2021 2nds), Matt Breida (2022 3rd), Chase Edmonds (2022 2nd and Trent Taylor), Nyheim Hines and 2022 3rd (2021 2nd), Devin Singletary and Hayden Hurst (Darren Waller) in 2021 alone have proven futile. His RB core is still brutal, and the Waller and Gaskin trade headline some poor RB investments. With the rest of his time primed for fantasy success, John needs to figure out the RB spot quickly in the draft.

Picks: 1.9, 4.9

Targets: Trey Sermon, Michael Carter

Tom

Tom has quietly become more competitive every year, and with a few good trades at the deadline last year, his team looks ready to get back to the playoffs. With a one game improvement in wins each of the last 3 seasons, can he take the next step and get to 7-6 and get a playoff berth behind a reinvigorated Lamar and some good young pieces like DK Metcalf, DeAndre Swift, Cam Akers, Deebo Samuel, and David Montgomery? WR could still use some improvement both short and long term, so that is where I see him going.

Picks: 1.10, 2.1, 2.5, 2.11, 3.2, 4.5

Targets: Elijah Moore, Rashod Bateman

Zeke

Zeke has built a roster full of Alabama playmakers, but the elusive successful Alabama NFL QB has not been found yet. Amari Cooper, Calvin Ridley, Derrick Henry, Damien Harris, and Kenyan Drake can fill most positions with “winning” players that come from a strong college program, which seems to mean a lot to him. Zeke may have the best roster top to bottom, with strong players throughout his bench, giving him room to target high risk/high reward players in the late first and with his later round picks.

Picks: 1.11, 3.6, 4.3, 4.7, 4.11

Targets: Mac Jones, Kadarius Toney

Zach

When the massive Saquon-CEH trade (others involved on both sides) was announced at the trade deadline, many people believed that Zach had given up on Saquon for too little in return, as CEH was getting carries but not many touchdowns and wasn’t generating lots of fantasy points after being the TLM 1.1 in 2020. With Zach loading up on Chiefs, including Mahomes, CEH, Tyreek Hill, and even the Kansas City defense, he won the championship in 2021, making the trade well worth the cost. With solid depth and elite players at multiple positions, Zach can afford to take some risks on young WR.

Picks: 1.12, 3.12

Targets: Rondale Moore, Elijah Moore

Jordan

Not really sure if Jordan is rebuilding, reloading, going for it, etc. He is loaded up with picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, but it may be difficult to roster all of these. He is in a prime trade up position to a team that will have roster room to take a couple swings, but with a team that looks just okay on paper, not having a 1st round pick is a difficult place to be. With 5 players from last years team Free Agents (Chris Thompson, Alshon Jeffery, Duke Johnson, Todd Gurley, and Tyler Eifert), which is a horrible sign to the value of some players currently on the roster, it may be time to make a decision. Also, Jordan has seen his win total drop by 2 wins for 3 straight years, maybe hinting that it is time to tear it down while nobody else is? With no total weaknesses and only QB and TE as strengths, Jordan can take plenty of shots at a WR or RB difference maker.

Picks: 2.3, 2.6, 2.7, 2.12, 3.1, 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, 3.10, 4.4

Targets: Michael Carter, Terrace Marshall

David

David’s roster is very solid, but not exciting. Until you get to CMC, who can cover weaknesses with his ridiculous fantasy usage. Trading for Mike Davis was huge for David last year to keep the valuable CAR RB spot locked into his lineup, and it proved even better with him looking like the starter in Atlanta. David may need to lock down that spot again by grabbing Chuba Hubbard, a massive draft-faller after his 2000 yard season in 2019-20. With only one pick, he will need to decide whether to shoot for the moon and get another valuable contributor or be safe and protect his top fantasy investment CMC.

Picks: 2.9

Targets: Chuba Hubbard

Bryce

Bryce currently has 2 picks on the spreadsheet: His 2022 3rd and his 2022 4th. Not a ton of value here as he pushed all his chips in last summer only to choke in the semis. You just know Bryce will get rookie fever and make an emotional move to get into the 3rd or 4th round and expect that poor player to do big things against all odds, then randomly fire a shot at John for no particular reason.

Picks: None

Targets: Anthony Schwartz, Amon Ra St. Brown
